Samurai Training in Tokyo: Swords, Bushido & Mental Discipline
■ Experience Overview
Train like a real samurai — not a staged performance, but authentic martial arts practice in a traditional Japanese dojo.
This immersive experience takes place at a traditional dojo in Tokyo’s Kojimachi district, once part of Edo Castle’s inner grounds where samurai honed their sword skills.
The training begins with learning samurai etiquette and the spirit of Bushido, followed by breathing techniques and meditation to calm the mind.
Then, you'll move on to basic wooden sword drills, strength training with a heavy practice stick, and silent walking exercises that improve balance and focus.
You will also learn authentic samurai sword techniques practiced safely with wooden training swords, and experience guided one-on-one training with the instructor to apply what you’ve learned.
During the break, enjoy authentic matcha green tea and traditional Japanese sweets in a quiet cultural setting.
At the end, you’ll receive a personalized scroll-style certificate with your name and the techniques you’ve learned.
You’ll also have the opportunity to wear traditional samurai attire and take a commemorative photo.
The entire experience is conducted in English and is beginner-friendly.
Designed to be safe and accessible, it is suitable for families, couples, and first-time participants.
Unlike many entertainment-style samurai experiences, this program focuses on real training, discipline, and technique.
Minimum 2 participants required.
Hiro Kuroki began martial arts in middle school to overcome bullying. In April 1987, he joined the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, graduated top of his training unit, and was assigned to an elite unit.
After leaving the Self-Defense Force, he trained through mountain retreats and waterfall practices.
He entered Seidokaikan and won the All Kyushu Newcomer's Tournament heavyweight division six months later.
In 1998, he began training in Daito-ryu Aiki Jujutsu and was certified as a master by the head family in 2012.
The Akihabara mass stabbing incident in June 2008 prompted him to start teaching self-defense.
He has taught self-defense to professionals, martial artists, and the general public, conducting over 300 seminars in Japan and instructing over 20,000 people in companies, municipalities, and educational institutions.
He has also taught self-defense to over 10,000 children in schools.
